Pain is one of the commonest reasons to seek medical advice. It can have a significant impact on an individual’s ability to work, their emotional well-being and sometimes their family. The International association for the study of Pain (IASP) updated its definition of pain in July 2020 to “An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage”
Chronic pain, pain that lasts longer than 3 months, is recognised as a long-term condition. Chronic pain continues after healing and could be because of damage to any part of the nervous system such as post stroke pain, diabetic neuropathy, and post herpetic neuralgia. Out of all chronic conditions, pain related diseases have the biggest impact on quality of life.
